Get into Google's AI Overviews
A real, honest checklist, not a secret formula, for what actually makes a page eligible to be quoted in Google's AI-generated answers. Score your own page below.
- AI Overviews and Search rankings are related but not the same thing, a page can rank well and still get skipped for the Overview, or vice versa.
- The factors below are honest best practices, equally weighted, not a proprietary scoring formula. No one outside Google knows the real weights.
- Fixing structure (headings, direct answers, schema) is usually faster than fixing authority (backlinks, reputation, history).
Ranking and being quoted are different jobs
Google Search ranks pages by relevance and authority. An AI Overview does something else: it generates a short, synthesized answer and decides which pages to cite as sources for it. A page sitting at position 6 with an unusually clear, direct answer can get quoted over a page sitting at position 1 that never actually states its answer plainly. That's genuinely good news for smaller sites, but it means optimizing for "rank #1" and optimizing for "get quoted" aren't identical projects, even though they overlap a lot.
Score your own page
Be honest, not hopeful. Check each one against the actual page you're evaluating, not what you intend to fix later.
What each factor actually means
- Direct answer near the top, the actual answer appears in the first sentence or two after the relevant heading, not buried after three paragraphs of preamble.
- Clear heading structure, one real H1, logical H2/H3 nesting. Structure is how a machine tells your sections apart; it's the same discipline covered in structuring FAQ content.
- Relevant structured data, FAQPage, HowTo, or Article schema where it genuinely applies, not schema stuffed in for the sake of it.
- Fast, stable page, Core Web Vitals are a real, long-standing part of Google's own ranking systems, and a slow or unstable page is working against itself before content even matters.
- Visible freshness, a real, accurate "updated" date and current information, not a stale page pretending to be current.
- Matches real search intent, answers what someone actually wants to know, not a keyword-stuffed approximation of it.
- Mobile-friendly, renders cleanly on a phone, since most real traffic and most crawling now happens mobile-first.
- Topical depth, part of a real cluster of related content on your site, not one orphaned page hoping to rank alone.
- Original content, genuinely yours, not lightly reworded from someone else's page.
- Real expertise signals, a named author, real citations, or original data, not anonymous generic text.
FAQ
Is ranking #1 in Google enough to appear in an AI Overview?
No. AI Overviews are generated from a separate process that favors pages with a clear, directly-stated answer and strong topical structure, not just search ranking position. A page ranking lower can still be the one quoted if it answers the question more directly.
Does blocking Google-Extended stop me from appearing in AI Overviews?
By Google's own documentation, Google-Extended controls training and grounding for Gemini specifically, not Google Search or AI Overviews. Those are powered by Googlebot, the same crawler that powers normal Search.
Do I need separate content for AI Overviews versus ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Not separate content, but the same underlying discipline matters everywhere: a direct, unambiguous answer near the top of the page, clear structure, and real evidence of expertise. Well-structured content tends to perform across all of these surfaces, not just one.
How long does it take to start appearing in AI Overviews?
There's no fixed timeline. It depends on how established your domain already is and how much needs fixing. Structural fixes (headings, schema, direct answers) can take effect as soon as a page is recrawled; authority-based gaps take longer to close.
