Google AI Mode Changes the Search Process, Not the Fundamentals
Google AI Mode searches across related subtopics to build an answer, making clear information and genuinely citable sources central to your visibility work.
- Google AI Mode is an experimental Search feature using an advanced version of Gemini, built for complex questions and follow-up conversations.
- Its query fan-out process runs multiple related searches, then synthesizes the results into one answer, so focus on being a source those searches can retrieve and cite.
- GapCite tracks Google's AI Overviews and six AI platforms, but separate Google AI Mode tracking is on the roadmap and is not built yet.
What Google AI Mode actually is
Google AI Mode is an experimental Search feature using an advanced version of Gemini. It launched on March 5, 2025, initially as an opt-in Search Labs feature for Google One AI Premium subscribers. It is built for complex, multi-part questions and supports follow-up questions in the same session. A verified live keyword-volume check found dramatically higher search interest in Google AI Mode than in most other AI-search terms, indicating mainstream awareness beyond what its initial invite-only status might suggest, but not establishing a current global rollout percentage.
AI Overviews vs. AI Mode
How query fan-out works
AI Mode uses query fan-out: it issues multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources at once, then synthesizes the results into one answer. It can pull from Google's Knowledge Graph, real-time information, and shopping data. For a business, the practical question is whether those related searches can retrieve sources that contain clear, citable information about it.
What your business should work on today
Focus on the same fundamentals that help visibility in AI Overviews and chatbot answers, rather than a separate set of AI Mode tricks. Make your information clear and structured, use clear structured data, and be a genuinely citable source. Work on appearing in the sources an AI's search step actually retrieves, because AI Mode's query fan-out also needs to find information before it can cite your business.
What GapCite can and cannot measure
GapCite tracks brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and Mistral, plus Google's AI Overview feature specifically. It does not currently track Google AI Mode as a separate measured engine. Separate AI Mode tracking is on GapCite's roadmap but is not built yet. Use GapCite to assess mentions in its supported platforms and AI Overviews, not as evidence of your visibility in AI Mode.
FAQ
Is Google AI Mode available to all of my customers?
AI Mode launched on March 5, 2025, initially as an opt-in Search Labs feature for Google One AI Premium subscribers. We do not have a precise current global rollout percentage to cite. High search interest shows awareness, not how many of your customers have access.
If my business appears in AI Overviews, does that mean it appears in AI Mode?
An AI Overview mention is not evidence of an AI Mode mention. They are distinct features: AI Overviews handle simpler queries, while AI Mode uses query fan-out for complex questions and supports follow-ups.
Do I need a separate optimization strategy for AI Mode?
The fundamentals are the same as those for AI Overviews and chatbot answers: clear structured data, genuinely citable information, and a presence in sources the AI's search step retrieves. Focus your work there rather than on a brand-new set of AI Mode tricks.
Can GapCite track whether AI Mode mentions my business?
Not yet. Separate Google AI Mode tracking is on the roadmap but is not built. GapCite currently tracks Google's AI Overviews and brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and Mistral.
