Why ChatGPT recommends your competitor instead of you

AI assistants don't pick favorites at random. They repeat what the web says about your category. Map exactly where your competitor is ahead, check if you're accidentally blocking AI, and get a ranked fix list.

The short version
  1. AI recommends the company that trusted pages mention most often and most clearly.
  2. Your competitor usually wins on third-party mentions: "best of" articles, reviews, comparisons.
  3. Some businesses also block AI crawlers without knowing. Check yours below in 30 seconds.

How AI decides who to recommend

When a buyer asks "what's the best CRM for a small agency?", tools like ChatGPT search mode, Perplexity and Gemini look up pages on the web, read them, and summarize. Whoever those pages name most often, and describe most clearly, ends up in the answer.

1. SearchThe engine looks up pages that match the buyer's question.
2. ReadIt pulls the brands those pages mention and how they describe them.
3. AnswerIt recommends the names that show up most, from sources it trusts.

That means the answer is mostly decided on pages you don't own. In a 2026 study of 10,000+ citations for "best X" style SaaS questions, list articles made up around half of everything AI cited, and about 70% for "alternatives to X" questions. Community forums were under 1% on those same questions. Your own homepage matters, but mostly for explaining clearly what you are.

Map your gap against one competitor

Pick the competitor AI names most often instead of you. Mark each signal for both of you. If you're not sure, search "best [your category]" and see whose name appears on the first page of results.

The 8 reasons your competitor wins

    1. They're in the "best of" articles and you're not

This is the big one. For shopping questions, AI leans heavily on list and comparison articles. If your competitor appears in the top-ranking "best [category]" posts and you don't, AI has little reason to name you.

    2. They have more reviews on review sites

Platforms like G2 and Capterra for software, or Google and Yelp for local businesses, show up often in AI answers. Reviews give the engine outside proof that you're a real option.

    3. They publish comparison pages

A page titled "X vs Y" or "Best alternatives to Y" answers the buyer's question word for word. AI engines can quote it directly.

    4. People talk about them in forums and videos

Reddit threads, YouTube reviews and LinkedIn posts add more places where your competitor's name sits next to your category.

    5. Their homepage says clearly what they are

If your homepage says "We empower teams to do more", AI can't tell what category you're in. "CRM for small marketing agencies" is easy to match to a buyer's question.

    6. Their pages are recent

AI engines tend to prefer pages with a visible, recent update date, especially for "best of" and "2026" style questions.

    7. They don't block AI crawlers

Some sites block AI bots in robots.txt, often through a plugin or a copied template. If search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot can't read your site, those engines rely only on what others say about you. Check yours below.

    8. They've been around longer

Older brands have simply collected more mentions. You can't change your age, but you can close the other seven gaps, which is where the gap usually comes from anyway.

Check if you're blocking AI crawlers

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in your browser, copy everything, and paste it below. The checker reads it right here on the page. Nothing is sent anywhere. For the full picture of every AI crawler by name, see the complete AI crawler list.

    What the crawlers do

If you're blocking something you didn't mean to, change the line from Disallow: / to Allow: / for that crawler, or delete its block. On WordPress, check your SEO or security plugin, since many add these rules automatically.

    FAQ

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

AI assistants repeat what trusted pages say about your category. If your competitor appears in more best-of articles, review sites, comparison pages and community threads, the AI has more reasons to name them.

Can my robots.txt stop AI from recommending me?

It can limit it. Blocking crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot stops those engines from reading your pages when they search the web, so they rely more on what other sites say about you.

Does a bigger company always win?

No. A smaller business that is listed in the right comparison articles and explains its category clearly can be recommended over a larger one.

How long does it take to close the gap?

Fixes like robots.txt and homepage wording can be picked up within weeks. Earning mentions in articles and reviews takes longer, usually a few months.
