Mark up real customer feedback

Use GapCite's free Review schema generator to mark up a real individual review, or use the optional aggregate fields to summarize many real reviews.

The short version
  1. Review marks up one real review. AggregateRating summarizes many reviews with an average rating and total count.
  2. Review structured data affects Google star-rating rich result eligibility and gives AI assistants an explicit signal about real customer ratings.
  3. Enter real feedback and ratings only. A missing rating is honest; a fabricated one risks the page's credibility.

Why review schema matters for AI visibility

When an AI assistant is deciding what to recommend or cite, review structured data gives it an explicit, unambiguous signal about how real customers rated something. That is different from leaving the rating implied in page text. The same structured data also affects eligibility for star-rating rich results in classic Google search.

Review vs AggregateRating: one review or many

Schema.org's Review type marks up a single, real, individual review with a reviewer name, rating, and review text. GapCite's generator includes fields for those details, an individual star rating from 1 to 5, and the name of the specific thing being reviewed. AggregateRating is a different type: it summarizes many reviews using an average rating and total count, which the tool provides as separate, optional fields. A page can correctly use either type or both, depending on the real feedback it contains.

Never fabricate a rating to fill a field

A missing rating is a real, safe, honest state, not a reason to invent one. Google's guidelines explicitly prohibit fabricated review markup and incentivized review markup without disclosure. Google has taken real manual action against sites caught doing this. A fake rating risks the whole page's credibility with Google and any AI system that reads structured data the same way.

Pair customer feedback with product and FAQ schema

GapCite's free Product schema generator covers what is being sold, while its free FAQ schema generator covers Q&A content. The Review schema generator is the complementary piece for real customer feedback. Use the distinction to choose the markup that matches your content: product details, questions and answers, or customer reviews.

FAQ

What information do I need to mark up one customer review?

Use the real reviewer's name, review body text, individual star rating from 1 to 5, and the name of the specific thing being reviewed. These are the individual-review fields in GapCite's generator.

What if I have an average rating across many reviews?

Use the optional aggregate fields for the average rating and total review count. Those values describe AggregateRating, which summarizes many real reviews rather than marking up one individual review. A page can use both types correctly.

Can I add a rating if a customer left feedback without one?

Do not invent a rating to fill the gap. A missing rating is an honest state. Google's guidelines prohibit fabricated review markup, and fake ratings risk the page's credibility with Google and AI systems that read structured data the same way.

Is Review schema only useful for Google star ratings?

No. It affects eligibility for star-rating rich results in classic Google search, but it also gives AI assistants an explicit signal about how real customers rated something when they are deciding what to recommend or cite.
