AI traffic: Google Analytics and the website beacon

Choose a traffic source

  1. Click Visibility.
  2. Click Traffic.

You have two optional sources:

  • Google Analytics 4: real sessions that GA4 attributes to an AI assistant, plus conversions, called key events, and revenue when GA4 has them.
  • Website beacon: visits referred by AI assistants and AI crawler visits that load the snippet.

Both sources show counts for the last 30 days.

Connect Google Analytics 4

  1. In the GapCite dashboard, click Copy beside the service account email.
  2. In Google Analytics, open Admin, then Property access management.
  3. Click +, then Add users.
  4. Paste the service account email, give it the Viewer role, and click Add.
  5. Open Admin, then Property details.
  6. Copy the Property ID. It is a number, such as 123456789.
  7. Paste the Property ID into the GapCite dashboard and click Connect.

You can disconnect at any time. If GapCite cannot reach the property, the card says so and repeats the setup steps.

Install the website beacon

  1. Copy the website beacon snippet from the dashboard.
  2. Add it to every page of your site, for example in your footer template.

Once the snippet has fired, the dashboard shows Installed, last ping X ago.

Click Show snippet to access the snippet again.

Understand beacon counts

The beacon counts visits referred by these AI assistants:

  • ChatGPT, including links tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com.
  • Perplexity.
  • Gemini.
  • Claude.
  • Copilot.
  • Meta AI.
  • You.com.

It also counts AI crawler visits that load it. Most AI crawlers do not run scripts or load images, so beacon crawler counts are low by nature.
